To Labrador

So, the Labrador adventure begins. I am in Labrador with Kiley Best, who is a fisheries biologist also with the Centre for Fisheries Ecosystems Research (CFER), based in the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University. Kiley is helping me with this part of my research which is great.

As part of my global research in the use of fishery closures for my Phd, I am especially interested in a closed area in Southern Labrador, an area that was closed with the support of local crab fishers. I am interested to find out what the fishers think about this closure now, after it has been closed to trawling since 2003 and there are many people who want to talk to us about this, and I am looking forward to having some great conversations.

After a great short flight, we picked up our hire car, a lovely ford escape SUV and headed out. After a brief moment were we almost went the wrong way, only almost!, we were off on our Labrador adventure. Or first stop was the Northern Lights Inn to pick up a satellite phone and on we went for our 4hr drive up the coast to Port Hope Simpson, originally, this was a logging town founded in 1934 and is the largest community in southeastern Labrador.

We are lucky as the road has been impassible for a few days but today, it is clear and we have clear blue skies and pure white landscapes. I even had to buy some sunglasses, this made me very happy, even though it is -12.

The snow cut channels along the road looked so inviting that we couldnt resist getting out and having a little play in the snow and did a bit of advertising for our office too!
